Porsche 919 Hybrid Le Mans 2015 in 1:18 scale

By Fabrizio Panico

A few months ago a new model was added to my 1:18 scale Porsche promotional models collection: the 919 hybrid, winner of Le Mans 2015.

An imposing model, it was produced as a diecast by Spark for Porsche as a Special Edition (WAP 021 819 0G) but there seems to be no visible difference at all with the identical resin Spark item (no. 18LM15), apart from the box, the black base and the price. There are no opening parts, but despite this it is quite fragile due to the many antennas and needs quite a lot of care in handling.

The real car is a sports-prototype racing car of the Le Mans Prototype 1-Hybrid (LMP1-H) category. It has a composite chassis of carbon fibre with a honeycomb aluminium core, and a turbocharged V4 engine with lithium-ion battery for energy recovery, plus an exhaust-energy recovery system. 2013 was its first public showing with only an eleventh place at the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours race. In 2015, with more than 80% new parts, car no. 19 was driven to victory at Le Mans by Earl Bamber, Nico Hulkenberg and Nick Tandy. Other 919s took second and fifth place with cars no. 17 and 18. The 919 went on to win both the 2015 and 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship.

An important car, but (alas) an ugly one, at least compared to the Ford, Ferrari and Porsche of the 1960s, and not helped by its white and black lettered livery (excellently rendered), based on the Porsche slogan “Porsche Intelligent Performance”.

Catalog Corner: Märklin RAK

by Karl Schnelle

Dr Horst Macalka published  a great series of Catalogue Corners in the print version of MAR.   He wrote about many different toy car companies over many issues.  Since then,  I have been documenting the Märklin RAK series at HobbyDB, so I decided it was time for an updated Catalog Corner.   Horst wrote about all Märklin auto catalogs from 1935 to 1972 (MAR, No 67, Nov/Dec 1992, p 3374) that he had in his collection, but I will cover only the newer RAK series from 1968 to 1975.

RAK 1968

[Click photos to enlarge.]

Märklin RAK  were mostly German cars from the 1960s and 70s, race cars, sports cars, and sedans.  The casting were very precise and reminded me of their diecast HO train engines of the period.  Most had opening doors and came in various colors.   Not much documentation about the series is available except for an excellent booklet in German (2001) with all the details.  The hardcopy MAR also had a short article about them years ago written by me (MAR, No 39 Extra, 1989)!

The oldest catalog I have is from 1968 (above) when the RAK series was introduced.  The cover shows the #1810 Porsche 910, and it opens from the top.  The 12-p catalog has the older 8000 range of cars and trucks in the back half.  This copy is all in English.  At the back, 1800, 1803 ,and 1811 are listed as coming shortly.   So the  RAK series must not have been introduced in numerical order.  That seems strange to me.  1805 is the lowest number in this first catalog.

Rak 1968-2

The catalog with the 1802 Chaparral 2F on the cover is in German with DM prices but has no date or Märklin part number as the other catalogs do.  Since 1802 is marked Neu (New) inside the catalog, it has to be late 1968.  Half the contents are Mercury model cars from Italy; they were imported by Märklin into Germany at this time.  Soft rubber  tires are shown as in the earlier 1968 catalog.  The catalog is a fan-fold style.

RAK 1969

Then, for 1969, a large ‘psychedelic’ catalog was issued with five abstract speeding cars on the cover.  Dated by the part number on the back, it opens from the top and is also a fan-fold.  Both front and back are shown above. Five models are marked as new this time and my copy is in English. The Hot Wheels revolution has caught up to even Märklin by now and two of the five new cars are shown with hard plastic whizzwheels. The rac name is also used on the cover for the first time, rac with a c!  The old 8000 series of trucks is still shown on the other side.

The 1970 catalog returns to the smaller size of the very first catalog and is in five languages. It is dated by the part number on the back and has the 1815 Porsche 907 on the cover.  The rac name is now spelled rak with a k!   It opens from the left and shows actual photos of five cars to be released in 1970.

Marklin RAK 1971

The 1971 example (above)  is also in five languages but is sized like the Matchbox, Dinky, and Corgi catalogs of the time.  Two cars are on the cover with the large 4-door BMW 2500 crash-landing on top of the Mercedes C111!!! Three models are listed as new for 1971 and are shown with photos again of the actual cars.

Marklin RAK 1972

The 72 catalog that I have is a small tri-fold thing with one side covered with all the models.  The back shows Mercury 1:43 “Märklin -Import”.  My copy is German only and prices in DM.

Marklin RAK 1973

1973 returns to the larger, more-colorful format but is still a tri-fold design.  Sadly no new models are shown.  The inside is a similar matrix design like 72 of all the models, but the other side has a lot of marketing talk in 5 languages:  “The raks of the famous 1800 series are displaying their amazing true-to-life characteristics, their beauty, and their extras!”  Translation at its best! 🙂

Marklin RAK 1974

The next to last one, ’74 (above),  is also a tri-fold but opens the other direction, left-to-right. The exact  same marketing lingo is present.  No new issues are marked.

RAK 1975

And finally, the last catalog from ’75 is a multi-fold poster style with lots of Mercury cars and motorcycles.  All in German and still no new models.

The large Märklin train catalogs from the same years also showed the RAK series.  After 1975, the RAK series disappeared from those catalogs as well.  Some RAK models were reissued over time after 1975, but I have seen no catalogs since the ’75 example above.  If any readers have any other RAK catalogs, please let MAR Online know!

News from the Continent 12/2015: Herpa

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Here is the news about a selection of Herpa releases in the final quarter of  2015.

1:43 scale

Two more 1:43 scale models have been released. The models are diecast to a high standard of finish and packed in a show case with a clear plastic cover.
070904  BMW X4 black
070911  BMW X4 mineral white metallic
The new BMW X4 comes again as a “crossover” a mixture of a saloon, a coupe and a SUV. Fitted with a  4×4 drive system, four doors and a design similar to the BMW X6. The rear body design is more pleasing on the X4 I think.
The body shape is well replicated. A brown interior is visible through the neatly glazed windows and sunroof. Lots of detailed parts are added and the wheels are nicely made with calipers clearly visible through castings. The model is rounded off with a detailed base plate.
The bonnet and tailgate open and a detailed engine is visible.
070942  Volkswagen Touareg – black
070950  Volkswagen Touareg – Sand gold metallic
This is the latest re-working of Volkswagen’s big SUV and it has been excellently modelled by Herpa.
The contours are true to the original with the gaps between doors, lids, and filler flaps finely engraved. The paint coat is finely applied and fault free. Many small parts are used to add additional detail. The interior is also an authentic replica even the cupholders in the centre console have not been forgotten. Again the wheels are good showing the brakes mounted behind clearly. Finally the baseplate is well detailed with the rear exhaust a separate component for greater realism.

1:87 Scale

745154  GTK Boxer transport vehicle – decorated
The latest armoured military transporter. Developed to meet the needs of the German Bundeswehr today. The miniature is authentically shaped and fitted with a cannon for self-defence. It is  painted in camouflage tan and green.
745161 GTK Boxer Ambulance vehicle – decorated
An Ambulance developed from the military transport vehicle described above.
The military vehicles are released in newly designed boxes for showing the new “Herpa Military” model range. New moulds are quickly joining re-workings of the former ROCO models to build this new series.
305020  Roman Diesel articulated concrete mixer
In the former Soviet states the Roman Diesel was a design licensed from the West German manufacturer MAN. It was common in the GDR. Here it is released as a detailed model of an articulated concrete mixer.
305136  Volvo FH Gl bulk drawbar “Wandt”
The forwarder Wandt operates the new Volvo. It can be seen in the customers livery as well as that of this Brunswick based company.
092142  Wartburg 353 1985 Volkspolizei
The Wartburg saloon is issued again. Now in the 1985 version as a patrol car of the former DDR Volkspolitzei. The body is moulded in white and the lower area of the body is printed in authentic brown-green. The roof carries two blue warning lights and a loudspeaker.
305273  Scania Bonnet tractor with articulated bulk-container
The Dutch company Boere, located near Rotterdam, runs this articulated container transporter using a Scania bonneted tractor unit.
028493 / 038492  Volkswagen Touran pure white/pacific blue metallic
After the Golf and Polo, now the Touran has been updated to adopt  the current design line of the Volkswagen Group. A lot of detail is printed including fine roof racks and even the trim underneath the bumper is embossed.
028561 Audi A4 saloon – brilliant black / 038560  Audi A4 saloon – argus brown metallic
Only just released this model was developed in co-operation with Audi Design and Construction department so it could be released at the same time as the real car. A nice model with nice paint and small parts to detail it.
027694  Audi A4 saloon with camouflage pattern
The new Audi A4 in the decoration applied to the development mules for the the final road tests.
027717  Audi R8 V10 Plus
Here the body painted in matt black with contrasting chromed wheel rims.
028523  Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe indian red
038522  Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe sapphire blue metallic
The Porsche Coupe is well modelled and finished. Featuring fault free printing and a realistic interior.
