Ixo Q1 2023

By Maz Woolley

Announcements of models for the first quarter of 2023 are being made by Wholesalers who must be confident that the goods were made and made it to a container ship before the Chinese New Year shutdown started recently. We will no doubt hear of many more proposed releases next week when the Nuremberg Trade Toyfair opens.

PCT Industries continues to release models under its Ixo brand. Many of the models are based on castings that have already been seen in various partwork series, but when released under the Ixo brand they are generally in new colours and often incorporate a little more detail. This is appropriate as the UK suggested retail price of an Ixo model is often twice the price of a partwork issue.

PCT models are made in China, and in Bangladesh, for Macau and are generally sealed diecast models in various scales.

This article looks at just a few of the many models Ixo intend to ship. Please note that these are pre-production colour test models so there may be some changes before they went into production.

1:43 Scale

February Scheduled Releases

GMC General Beige 1980

One of the few producers of trucks to 1:43 scale. This GMC is in period colours and should be popular with collectors of US vehicles. At this scale it will be an impressive model.

BMW Alpina B6 3.5S Metallic Red 1989

Some nice detailed printing and flush glazing but it still has a hint of partwork about it.

Jaguar XJ 8 (X 308) Green 1998

I believe that this casting was used in the Atlas Jaguar Collection several years ago when it was produced in British Racing Green. It is a nice model and is RHD which will please UK buyers.

Saab 99 EMS Metallic Silver 1972

Ixo already sells this in rally livery and as a red saloon car. This casting would appear to be derived from the casting used to produce several models in the Atlas Saab Collection.

Lada 1500 Green 1980

This casting has been used in several partworks made for former Comecon bloc countries. Here it is badged as a Lada , a brand used mainly on export cars at this time, rather than as a Soviet market Vaz.

Although nicely finished this model may struggle to sell as ex-part work models abound on eBay at a considerably lower cost.

March Scheduled Releases

Scania 142 M Blue 1981

These Ixo trucks model a cab that is already popular with collectors of 1:48 scale models from Tekno and others. It is nicely detailed and made and is very much cheaper than the 1:48 scale models.

Scania 142 M Green 1981

MAN F 2000 Red 1994

MAN F 2000 Blue 1994

This nicely detailed model is again of a popular subject as modelled by Italieri to 1:24 scale and Model Car Garage to 1:18. Given the size and detail included these models are a very reasonable price here in the UK.

Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 (W111) Metallic Grey 1969

This looks to be the same casting used to produce the Greenlight model based on the car seen in the movie ‘The Hangover‘. Considerable printed detail is used which includes US specification separate front lights and side amber lights. A neat model of an impressive car.

Volvo 240 GL Red 1989

Again I think this is derived from the 240GLT casting produced for the Atlas Volvo Collection. Though here there are a few changes with a set of roof bars fitted. It is a good model capturing the boxy shape of the original car and sure to be popular as the Atlas Volvo Collection only sold in a limited range of countries so models are not easy to come by.

Simca 1301 Special Metallic Green 1972

The 1301/1501 casting has been seen in several different French market partworks from the Route Bleu series to the Hachette Simca Collection. Here the windscreen wipers look finer than on the partwork cars but the finish is otherwise similar. The side chrome stripe seems rather crude by current standards.

Renault 5 Alpine Gr. 2 Silver 1978

Models of the Renault 5 abound in part work and rally series. This model seems to be fairly basic despite the abundance of extra lights. The wide wheel arches seem to have rather small wheels within them too. It is a shame this is so basic perhaps in full Group 2 rally livery it would be more impressive. Personally, I would much prefer the lovely Ixo Renault 5 GT Turbo previously released which looks really good.

1:24 Scale Releases February

Talbot Sunbeam Lotus #16 Rallye WM Rally Monte Carlo 1981 G.Frequelin/J.Todt

Talbot Sunbeam Lotus #8 Rallye WM Rally Monte Carlo 1981 H.Toivonen/F.Gallagher

This model was originally expected late in 2022 but has slipped to 2023. The Talbot Sunbeam was a successful rally car which was a surprise as the Sunbeam had been created as a stop gap in the Chrysler range. It used a shortened Avenger chassis and part bin fittings from other Chrysler models. Once taken over by Peugeot-Citroën the Sunbeam was soon dropped as it overlapped the new Horizon and was made in Linwood in Scotland which was shut in 1981.

The Ixo model as appeared before in various rally ranges and is quite a nice representation of the rally car but the front lights seem to be too small and flat to me when compared with pictures of the real cars at Monte Carlo.

1:18 Scale

Fiat 131 Abarth Blue 1980

Another homologation special here. 400 were built to allow the car to qualify for group four rallying. It took the combined efforts of Fiat, Bertone, and Abarth to produce them. The simple badging shows it as an Abarth as do the body modifications. Ixo have already released this in yellow.

The Ixo model is a bit stark in it’s civilian finish and it will look much better in rallying livery.

History of Roly Toys – Part VI

By Miguel Stefanelli, Collector and Researcher

Text and photographs copyright of the Author(s) unless otherwise stated.

Discovery of Scania-Vabis dump truck, Roly Toys Nr. 4, with light gray chassis.

Miniature Roly Toys have been with me since I was a boy, 12 years old. So, it’s been 54 years collecting these beautiful gems from my nation’s miniature industry. Therefore, I was very excited to discover a light gray Scania-Vabis nr. 4 chassis. Until now, as can be seen in Part I, the Scania nr. 4 was known for the different colors of the cab and the bucket, but the chassis always came in black, as show below.

So, when I found this gem in a friend’s collection, I immediately wanted to have the miniature in hand to make the analysis that I deemed necessary. I managed to make an exchange for another miniature with that friend, having then prepared the following “Audit Report” (Ed.’s note: After all, this is a fun hobby, so why not!):

Report on Authenticity Certification

Object:
Scania-Vabis L76, Roly Toys’ dump truck model nr. 4, 1/100 scale, red cab, yellow dump body, and light gray chassis.

Motivation:
Unprecedented occurrence of the chassis painting in light gray color (sui generis).

Procedure:
Miniature has undergone a process of investigation into the originality of the color of the chassis in reference, since current knowledge has previously identified a black color only, characterized by the cab and dump body of distinct colors.

Analysis carried out:

With the miniature in hand, the following findings were recorded (see photos below):

  1. The rivet that secures the cab to the chassis is unblemished and is original, with perfect edges, containing no signs of tampering and/or traces of paint that could originate from overcoating.
  2. The coupling pin of the dump with the chassis is original and also does not contain signs of violation and neither traces of paint, of possible repainting.
  3. In places where there is damage to the paintwork of the chassis (peeled, chipped, “flea bites”), checked with a magnifying glass, there is no trace of possible undercoating of black paint, recognized as hitherto the traditional pattern of the chassis of this model.
  4. At the upper junction of the chassis with the cab, no splash or dash of ink could be detected in such a short space between them.
  5. Tyres and axles are intact, totally original in appearance, and also do not show any ink splashes.
  6. Seen inside the cab, where possible, with artificial lighting, it predominates internally the light gray color of the chassis.
  7. The colors of the cab (red) and the dump body (yellow) are also original.

Conclusion:
In light of the above evidence, I assert that the light gray paint of the Scania-Vabis L76 chassis, Roly Toys nr. 4, red cab and yellow dump, is original, factory-shipped, which characterizes yet another new color composition in this type of model, where, until then and until this date, at least for this collector and researcher, who subscribes to this report, is an unprecedented fact. Therefore, on the basis of the above mentioned evidence, I therefore present my thoughts on the recognition of this new variant of the original chassis paint, in light gray color, for the aforementioned Scania-Vabis dump truck, Roly Toys’ miniature nr. 4.

Latest Astrans Model

By Mick Russell

Text and photographs copyright of the Author(s) unless otherwise stated.

Having just received my 1:50 scale #76969 Tekno Astran model today I was eager to put it on display with my other Astran models.

Photograph from Tekno.NL website

Astran were Middle East pioneers back in the 1960’s under the name of Scansmith and then Asian Transport eventually being shortened to Astran. I have had the pleasure of knowing several of the drivers for Astran and have built 1:24 scale models of their trucks for them over the years.

The Model

This model was due out in December 2021 and is unusual in that the real truck is owned by Karl Skilton, the same person that owns the previously released Volvo FH1 once owned by Roger Gool. Karl has made changes to the real thing; this truck is not known as ‘Triggers broom’ for no reason! Amongst other changes a modified exhaust and extra livery items have been added. Putting these changes aside this is an excellent representation of the real truck. However, there are a few niggles as always. I will compare it to a model that I made eight years ago for Karl using photos he supplied.

The trailer supplied with the model has no rear doors only a canvas curtain. The trailer should be the same as the one supplied with the FH1 Volvo REG008 Roger Gools old motor. The Arabic script on the tilt of the real vehicle may be ignored as Karl added that on a new tilt cover. In contrast the trailer tool locker and tank are different on this new model and they are correct, whilst those on the earlier Volvo model are wrong.

Other niggles are:

  • Lack of roof mounted aircon pod
  • Bracket holding the ‘susies’ (trailer air and electrical lines) is wrong being a generic Tekno one
  • The exhaust bracket is wrong
  • The name board above the front visor is too big and is therefore partially obscured.
  • The interior should be red and black not all black.

On the plus side the paint job is nice, and the detail on the decals is correct and well printed. The spotlight colours and side markers are also correct for the truck as it is today.

Overall I would give the new Tekno model 8/10, this is of course my personal opinion.

When you look at the photos you will see that the the bull bar on the model I made is a bit wrong 🙄

Some releases expected later this year

By Maz Woolley

Details of models to be released later this year are arriving thick and fast. Perhaps manufacturers and their contractors have now planned forthcoming production slots following the return to work after the end of the Chinese New Year holidays.

Model Car Group

The MCG brand is part of the ever expanding Model Car World group led by Klaus Kiunke and based in Germany. Back in 2021 Vendis venture capitalists took a majority share in the group and since then Brekina has been absorbed into the group and a major investment made in the production of models in all the group’s ranges. MCG is the brand which sells 1:18 scale diecast and sealed models made in China for Germany. In price terms they are competitors for Solido and Norev 1:18 scale ranges.

Pre-production images have been shared for the following forthcoming models which I am sure will be of interest to Ford collectors amongst others.

18271 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2, White 1990 LHD
18272 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2, Met. Grey Tuning 1990 LHD
18273 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2, Red 1990 LHD
18809 Ford Capri Turbo Grp.5 #54 DandW DRM Zolder H. Soldeck 1980

Brit Bus

Brit Bus models are made to 1:76 scale in China and are detailed models. The body is diecast with a plastic base and interior. They have considerable external printed detail and mirrors and exhaust are separately moulded items. Inside the detail includes detailed luggage racks, bars and poles in the correct location. Some of the series have opening engine cover and poseable front wheels. All the models below are based on the East Lancs OmniDekka body produced from 2006.

The models shown below are due to be issued soon and feature current liveries.

ES17A Scania East Lancs Omnidekka Bluestar – Southampton
ES17B Scania East Lancs Omnidekka Bluestar – Romsey
ES2-04A Scania East Lancs Omnidekka – Clapton Go Ahead London
ES2-04B Scania East Lancs Omnidekka – Stratford Go Ahead London

Corgi

Corgi’s latest blog post, which can be found here, explains the background to the production of the newest model due to join their Harry Potter range. The model is made in China, and although Corgi do not state a scale on their website 1:36 is mentioned in the blog post.

A considerable effort has been made to add figures to the model which will delight Harry Potter film merchandise collectors. The model is based upon a Royal Enfield single cylinder motorcycle with an exaggerated Watsonian style sidecar as featured in the Harry Potter Exhibition and at Orlando Wizarding World.

CC99727 Harry Potter Hagrid Motorcycle and Sidecar

Corgi’s blog also provides photographs of two soon to be released Vanguards which are based on existing castings.

Corgi continue to release models based upon specific cars re-using previously developed castings.

Copyright of Car Magazine

VA10113 – Triumph Stag Mk1 Signal Red  – (LD10) 10th Pre-Production Car

Here the model is based upon a car which features on a 1970 magazine cover as shown above. The Stag model needs few comments as it has been in the range for many years. It is however a good model and better than many other firms models.

VA14502 – Volkswagen Transporter Type 1a Kombi  Palm Green and Sand Green

This model is based on Corgi’s recently developed Transporter casting, which replaces the old one which dates back to the original Corgi Classics range. The new casting is to modern standards and features separate lights, mirrors and door handles as well as finer wipers.

Here the real vehicle it is based on can be clearly identified and it was built in 1957 and is painted in a correct colour combination for that year, UK Sports Car website tells us that the vehicle was imported from the US West Coast in 2010 and is fitted with a 1600 Twin Port engine with twin Weber carburettors. It also has had front disc brakes, and a dual circuit braking system fitted as well as Gene Berg quick shifter.

Triple9

The Internet seems curiously unwilling to reveal who is behind Triple9 Collectables. They have diecast models made to 1:18 scale in China as well as collectors perpex cases to show off your models. They have previously made many British and European sports cars. Q1 and Q2 2021 will see them produce many Soviet era vehicles to this large scale as listed below. Again no pre-production samples are show yet.

WSI Scania R580 Bartlett Haulage

The latest arrival in my collection is the Anglo Dutch Model Trucks (ADMT) exclusive WSI Scania R580 in the livery of Neil Bartlett, Coventry.

Neil Bartlett HaulageBartlett Aggregates, of Binley in Coventry are a family owned firm which has been trading for over 50 years. They are an independent haulage and aggregates company which supplies a wide range of quarry products to the trade and public. Their vehicles are a familiar sight on the roads round Coventry and its surroundings.

The WSI model is excellent and is built to a high standard. The pinstriping and livery on the unit and trailer is very crisp, even the small signage on the rear of the trailer is mostly legible.

The chassis of the trailer has some plumbing detail added, which is a nice touch as the model can be posed in a tipped position with working telescopic ram which shows off such details. See photographs above.

On the whole this is a lovely looking model and a credit to ADMT and WSI. The photograph above shows the new model alongside its Corgi sister from 2005. The photograph above that shows the real vehicles posed together.

I’m not sure whether the visor was changed at some point as the photo I took of the vehicle at Bartett’s 50th Anniversary open day in 2017 has a Scania 3 series visor as shown in the photograph above, but the model and the picture shown below from ADMT website shows it with a more standard visor. perhaps it may not have been practical for the driver?
