Morgan Super 3

By Maz Woolley

The Morgan Super three-wheeler was launched in 2012 with a S&S two cylinder motorbike engine and it echoed the original Morgan cars with their exciting performance and handling and complete lack of weather protection. The Super 3 replaces it re-engineered to meet modern rules on emission. To do this the twin cylinder motorcycle unit is jettisoned in favour of a three cylinder 1.5 litre Ford engine used in the Fiesta and driving the rear wheel via a previous model Mazda MX5 five speed gearbox . An even bigger change is the bonded aluminium monocoque supporting stressed metal panels, gone is all sign of Morgan’s historic use of wooden framing.

All this gives the car a rather different look at the front with no exposed air cooled cylinder heads and the need to channel air to side mounted radiators.

This is not a car suited to everyday use despite the weather proofing of instrumentation and even USB ports, nor one that many would undertake long journeys in. It is a car much more likely to be owned as a ‘toy’ to be played with from time to time and which gives it’s owners a great deal of pleasure mastering the art of controlling a small, light and quick three wheeler.

TSM Models are a well-known premium brand often seen producing manufacturers own dealer model ranges as well as selling under their own branding. Their models are usually diecast and are offered in 1:43 and 1:18 scales. In this case though the model is in resin to 1:43 scale and costs about 25% more than their diecast models. The Super 3 model is just coming into production with the green version currently with wholesalers and the other colours following.

Morgan Super 3 Jet Green

Morgan Super 3 Coral Orange

Morgan Super 3 Rhodium Silver

The real car is a rarity and I have never seen any of these revived Morgan three-wheelers on the road. The model from TSM is beautifully made and finished and allows Morgan enthusiasts to admire their own Super 3, albeit as a model rather than a real car.

TSM for July 2022

By Maz Woolley

TSM are based in Hong Kong and make models in China. They make models for manufacturers and museums as well as selling to the public through wholesalers. The models shown below are expected in the UK in July. These are sealed models moulded in resin to 1:43 scale.

Inflation has certainly affected the prices as in 2019 TSM 1:43 scale dealer models could be bought for less than half the current recommended price.

More TSM Models for 2022

By Maz Woolley

Top Speed Models produce models in China to several scales. They have a US office and appear to be US lead in terms of the product produced. They initially sold 1:18 scale sealed resin models and aimed to sell them at ‘entry-level’ prices though they are considerably dearer than 1:18 scale diecast models from Solido, Norev and others. More recently they created the Mini GT range of premium 1:64 scale models. The models shown have been announced as being available here in the UK in May 2022.

Some models are available in left and right hand side versions, others only in one form where they are modelling a specific car. Many models are sports racing models in competition colours but one or two ‘ordinary’ vehicles like Land Rover Defenders are modelled. The addition of a car trailer to the 1:64 range is interesting, maybe it is a forerunner of more racing accessory models.

TSM Models Q4 2021

By Maz Woolley

TSM (True Scale Miniatures) are a Hong Kong based producer of model cars. They produce in many scales and most models are made of sealed resin with photo etched detailing, except for the Mini-GT 1:64 range which is made of diecast metal.

All the photographs shown are of pre-production shots used for publicity. The models are all expected to ship in Q4 2021.

1:12 Scale

With a retail price not far short of 500 UK pounds this is a large, and expensive, model of the classic Tyrell-Ford with double front wheels. This was driven by Jody Scheckter to victory in the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix, which was the cars only Formula 1 race win.

The photograph shows the model to be highly detailed, though lacking a driver figure. The tubing on the Ford Engine seems to modelled realistically and shows to good effect in such a large scale.

Mini-GT 1:64 Scale

The detailed 1:64 models have proven to be popular with collectors and car fans alike. Mainly featuring Japanese vehicles as well as supercars from round the world. The range has struck a balance between being detailed and being affordable. Although most models are not showing an increase in prices for Q4 some newer ones are considerably dearer. Models are often supplied in LHD and RHD versions, though this is not always the case.

A cooperation with Exoto of Japan has recently been cancelled by TSM leading to some previously announced models being withdrawn, details of this may be found on the Mini-GT website http://www.minigt.com/.

The photographs of this range of models are rather smaller than the others provided.

New Defenders

By John. F. Quilter

Text and photographs copyright of the Author(s) unless otherwise stated.

Available from the official UK Land Rover website, or at UK retailers, is this pair of “new” Defenders, both the 90 and 110 versions.  These are made to 1:43 scale in China.  Mine came via a very helpful friend in the UK as the website will not sell outside the UK.

The models are made by TSM Models and they are packaged in Land Rover promotional packaging very attractively.  Like most TSM items they are quite detailed and painted in official LandRover colours: Gondwana Stone (metallic brown) and Pangea Green (metallic green). The paint is no where near as grainy as my camera seems to depict.

There is some underbody detailing, the alloy wheels are well done and even the brake discs and callipers are shown.  Interestingly, although sold for UK distribution, they are both LHD.   There is also an Indus Silver  110 fitted with the “Pro Accessory Pack” (roof rack, side ladder, and fender snorkel) with alternative wheels.

Probably at some point in the future these will be marketed by TSM directly to vendors other than the official Land Rover website, but it is nice to see Land Rover offering models in various scales to collectors.    Now if only the US Land Rover website would do likewise!

New for 2021 – A look around

By Maz Woolley

This article looks at some recent announcements that have caught my eye. There seems to be a lot of new models due this year even if some was originally announced for last year but missed the boat – quite literally in the case of some ranges that have had gaps between shipments.

KK Scale

KK Scale models are sealed diecast models to 1:18 scale made in China for Germany. The models have no opening parts but do have steerable/poseable front wheels.

KKS DC180602 Mercedes 600 SWB W100 Light Blue Metallic 1963

The recently released short wheel base Mercedes-Benz 600 is an impressive model in 1:18 scale. It has already been seen in light gold and black and is shortly to be released (Late March/April) in a light metallic blue which suits the car well. Although more frequently seen modelled as a long wheelbase version the short wheelbase was much more common, indeed there were more than 5 SWB cars made for every LWB one.

Road Kings

Road Kings are a sister company to KK Scale specialising in truck models and are again diecast in China for Germany. These 1:18 scale models have opening cab doors as well as steerable/poseable steering and are large!

Both the models shown below are based on castings already seen in the range but in new liveries. They are expected in UK by April.

RKS 180064 Volvo F88 JPS Team Lotus with Union Jack 1978

The KK Scale Volvo F88 has been seen previously in John Player Special livery with no mention of Team Lotus. Here we see another version of JPS livery but here Team Lotus branding is included. Truck experts have pointed to a few shortcomings in the accuracy of this Volvo model but it would certainly make an impressive display item with an authentic Team Lotus trailer.

RKS 180084 Peterbilt 359 Light Blue Metallic/Blue/ Silver 1967

Previously seen in several liveries including a stars and stripes version this is in a more sober blue finish with blue and silver striping. A lot of space would be needed to display this with an authentic trailer.

Britains

Britains has been owned by Tomy Group for some years now. They make Agricultural and Construction models, mainly to 1:32 scale. These are diecast in China for Tomy of Japan. Britains aim to offer value in their models whilst having accurate attachments. Whilst not as detailed as some other similar 1:32 ranges they are not as expensive as many of their competitors. They also produce a toy range but these are not covered here.

New models/liveries for 2021 include the following.

Kane Tri-Axel Halfpipe Silage Trailer

CLAAS Jaguar 980 with Orbis 900

John Deere 8R 410

John Deere 8R 370

Fendt 824 Vario PROFI Special Edition
CLAAS DISCO Front Butterfly Mower

CLAAS DISCO Rear Butterfly Mower

David Brown ‘Heritage Collection’

Ford 6600

No photograph of pre-production model available
John Deere X9 Combine

John Deere 4020

Farm Building set with John Deere Tractor

TSM Mini GT

The Mini GT range is diecast to 1:64 in China for Hong Kong based TSM. The models shown below are pre-production samples and may be subject to change and refinement when launched. They are expected in the UK in around June. The L and R suffix on the model number indicates whether LHD or RHD.

Aero Alfas

By Karl Schnelle

Text and photographs copyright of the Author(s) unless otherwise stated.

I just received the new Autocult Alfa Romeo so I thought it was time for a comparison of four recently produced 1:43 aerodynamic Alfas. I tried to place them in chronological order.

The #19 car is an 8C 2900 from the 24 hrs of Le Mans race of 1938. Made by TSM in resin. The car had an aerodynamic superlight body by Touring and completed 219 laps before it DNF’ed. You can see it being pushed to the side of the road here, due to a engine valve failure. It was restored and at the Alfa Museo now. (Also made by Minichamps.)

The Alfa Romeo script on the left front fender of the 82 2900 is tiny photo-etch!

Next up is the gorgeous Brooklin in white metal, the same 1938 car in Alfa Romeo Museo spec, maroon with no race numbers and spats on the rear wheels. I have a poor photo in low light from when I was at the Museo in 2018.

The third one is my new Autocult Berlinetta Aerodinamica, built for the 1939 Le Mans 24 Hours, and was based on a 6C 2500 SS engine and chassis. The car was lost after 1940, so this is recreation based on the original chassis from the 2000’s. Miles Collier wrote about it and the issue of its recreated or replica coachwork for Sports Car Market. It’s much wider than the previous 8C 2900 in 1/43 scale and more imposing, but how close is it to the original?

The final Alfa is another TSM but is a bit ‘newer’: a 1938 8C 2900B, the winner of the 1947 Mille Miglia. #230 is also in the Museo Storica according to the TSM rear license plate, but I can find no evidence of that in modern photos. The body is also by Touring but is much more indicative of expensive road cars of that era. The headlights are exposed and not recessed, the wings are separate and not absorbed into the bodywork, and the large bumpers are prominent on the front and rear. The narrow hood makes the car look much more upright and narrow than the previous three examples here.

The 1947 winner is a bright red in contrast to the other three, but with period photos being in black & white, maybe these are good guesses by the modern 1/43 makers. All four do make a great set, though!

More Truescale Mini GT Models for 2020

By Maz Woolley

Truescale Mini GT models are diecast to 1:64 scale in China. They are excellent miniatures. They are considerably more expensive than better known 1:64 suppliers like Mattel, Greenlight and others but they are made to a significantly higher level of detail and finish.

The models listed below are in many cases available as both left and right hand drive but only one is shown as they are otherwise identical.

1:64 Scale is Alive and Well

By Robin Godwin

Text and photographs copyright of the Author(s) unless otherwise stated.

Greenlight and M2 continue their dizzying rate of new releases and recolours in their respective ranges. Both have expanded to larger scales as well. Notably, Greenlight features a fairly active 1:43 scale range, which MAR Online features from time-to-time. These are mostly derivatives of earlier partwork issues, usually sourced from PCT, and cast either in China or Bangladesh. I realise that 1:64 is not that common in Europe, particularly in the UK, where 1:76 issues seem to dominate. However, it is increasingly popular in the US and Japan, and even Schuco of Germany has an “Edition 64” line, which is now also being marketed in the US (specially packaged in blister packs for this market). Round2 also continues releasing the Auto World line (accurate 1:64 scale), along with Johnny Lightning reissues (approximate 1:64 scales), although their Racing Champions Mint reissues have slowed significantly.

As further proof of the popularity of this scale, the well-known resin model company, TSM, has started issuing 1:64 diecast miniatures in a range called Mini GT. These are mostly high performance vehicles including Japanese supercars, Lamborghinis, McLarens and others. To date, it appears there is only one US distributor for these models – M & J Toys . Models sold in the US carry “MiJo Exclusive” (M & J) branding on the blister packs. Interestingly, M & J are also the importers of Schuco 1:64.

I only have one Mini GT, a 1990s Toyota Supra, in a rather boring, but authentic white. It is a beauty, with fine metal casting for both body and base (base shows some simple drivetrain and suspension components cast in), excellent tampo printed details, and superb flush glazing. There are no opening parts, but the shut lines are finely cast. The Supra curves can be difficult to capture accurately, let alone in this small scale, but TSM have done an excellent job. The MiJo Exclusive issue quantity is 4,800, and I’m guessing that does not include models intended for other markets, like Japan.

I’m not sure if M & J was the initiator of this range, (through TSM, of course), but I feel that they may have had significant input into some aspects of the marketing and packaging (other than being the exclusive US distributors). For instance, the Supra comes in a blister pack, very popular in North America, but also includes a unique model box, and inside that box is a formed plastic piece to keep the car secure should the collector wish to open and discard his blister pack (I understand some people do that).  It’s also a limited edition (at least the white version is) of 4,800 models. Typical of US marketing, there is also a “Chase” version. Every other US 1:64 manufacturer does this, so TSM is following a well-established precedent. I just don’t know how large the chase run is – other companies generally vary between one and five percent of total production for a given model. But the whole issue is complicated by the fact that the model is available in both left and right hand drive versions, with RHD being a nod to the Japanese market, but also nice for UK collectors. All in all, a great start to a very promising range, and all for $10 to $15 each from US based online vendors.

A very fine looking model with flush glazing. Many will be happy that there are no opening parts, although I prefer them when they are well executed.
Front of door shut line is actually finer than it appears in this shot. Blame Autumn long shadows. Toyota symbol tampo printed on the front is very well done. Not shown, but rear lights are well done tampo while front lenses are plastic pieces.
Clear formed plastic holds model in place inside the included box. This is sold as a collectors model and not a toy
Back of card with some TSM and MiJo details. Note model details above the barcode indicating LHD/USA
It’s North America, so of course there is going to be a chase car. White wheels and interior along with “raw” finish distinguish this example

Editor’s Note – TSM have been selling these models in the UK under their own branding through the major UK Model Wholesalers for just around a year now and we featured them previously here. There are no limited editions or ‘chase’ models sold here in the UK but the range appears to be a modest success appealing to collectors of Japanese cars, in particular those who already collect smaller models from Tomica and others. The European Supercars also seem popular with collectors. We see an increasing number of 1:64 models from Greenlight and others for sale here in the UK. These are often sold by traders of Matchbox and Hot Wheels, though at considerably higher prices than they go for in the US.

It is nice to see this TSM model in detail.
