Top Speed Land Rover Discovery Sport L550

By Matt Beaumont

The Land Rover Discovery Sport (codename L550) is a compact luxury SUV produced by British automotive company Land Rover. The vehicle went on sale during September 2014, with first deliveries in early 2015. It replaced the Freelander 2 in a revised Land Rover range of vehicles, with Discovery joining Range Rover as a sub-brand.

The Discovery Sport is based on the D8 Platform for off-road applications (Shared with Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar E-Pace). It is powered by a range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A three cylinder Hybrid is due to follow. Discovery Sport is the only version available in both five and seven seat layouts.

Official Publicity shot from Land Rover Copyright acknowledged.

The Model

I would like to say that this review is based on my own opinion, and my views of the model that I have bought. It is made by Top Speed (TSM) and I believe that it is currently only officially available through the Land Rover Dealer Network in a Land Rover branded box.

The model is a sealed resin item presented on a black base with a metal plaque to one corner, the car depicted is the pre facelift Discovery Sport HSE Luxury in Corris Grey with a panoramic roof and 20″ Style 5089, 5 split-spoke, Gloss Silver alloy wheels.

The Exterior

It’s finish is up to TSM / Top Speed‘s usual standards and is a very good representation of the subject matter. Care has to be taken when handling, especially the panoramic roof as it is a sheet of thin clear plastic and can deform easily and could possibly be dislodged. The lighting is very nicely modelled both front and rear. The badging is well realised using well applied decals. It wears a set of dealer, “showroom”, Land Rover plates.

The wheels, tyres and brake assemblies have been done very well with wheel nuts, tyre valves, and centre caps all clearly visible and the brake calipers painted a silver grey colour. Sadly there are no tyre branding markings present.

The Base

As is usual with most of these large scale resin models the underside is fairly plain. Here there is little to be seen with just the Top Speed logo and a very basic moulded exhaust and suspension.

The Interior

As is usual with these sealed resin models, like their 1:43 scale counterparts, what you can normally see of the interior is very limited as peering through the windows only gives a limited view. Fortunately with an SUV you have quite a big glass area and on this vehicle the added bonus of a Panoramic roof that allows a good view of the interior. That said it’s still quite a dark place but there is some really nice detailing in the car giving a true representation of the subject matter,  I took the model apart to get some more pictures and as you can see they show that there is some nice detailing in places,  but nothing particularly special.

In Summary

TSM Top Speed have done a very good job on this vehicle. Based on the models I have had from them in the past, more reviews to follow, they are now expected to produce a high standard of models. I hope that they keep up the good work!

The U.K Land Rover Dealer price for this model is competitive, and Land Rover are to be commended for not ‘loading’ the price in the way that some makers do. Long may this continue,

In my opinion TSM‘s standard of finish is to a higher standard than competitors like Otto mobile, B.O.S and even GT Spirit. Perhaps closer to the standards set by Spark, the better Look Smarts (LS) and Technomodels.

I can recommend this model to anyone who collects off-roaders, SUVs, or to anyone who owns a Discovery Sport and wants a model of their pride and joy.  If you want to get one have a look at the official Land Rover web site’s model car section. It is available on the UK website with product code/part number of 51LDDC005GYW. I am not sure what the availability will be outside the UK as not all countries local Land Rover sites will carry the full range of official Land Rover models.

MX41302-211 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Miesen Deutches Rotes Kreuz 2018

Maxichamps

Another revived mould diecast in China for Germany to 1:43 scale. Black is a good colour for this classic Mercedes-Benz and although derived from an old master this is still an excellent model of a popular car.

Minichamps

Minichamps releases in 1:43 continue to arrive on sale. The models shown are all made in China for Germany. The releases continue to mix Grand Prix cars, racing cars, and cars. It is interesting to note that the revived 1:87 scale line appears to have stopped introducing models at the moment.

A TSM Land Rover

TSM produce many models for car companies to be badged as dealer promotional models. These may in time also turn up produced as TSM boxed products. Here we have a model of Winston Churchill‘s famous Land Rover moulded in resin in China for Europe. The model is to 1:43 scale. This model is due in August and is priced in the UK at around the same price as a Matrix model.

Northcord Model Company

The new Northcord operation seems to be recovering after the companies failure a couple of years ago. The new Enviro400 MMC model seems to be selling well and is now into a second release of the 10.5 metre single door casting of this modern double-decker. Here it is liveried in the Bournemouth Transport Yellow Buses livery as fleet number 200 (SN17 MTO) which joined their fleet in 2017.

Le Mans Miniatures

Although primarily known for their 1:32 scale slot car range of accurate historic racing cars they also make figures suitable to show with static models in several scales. Here we look at new models in 1:32 and 1:43 scales.

1:43 scale racing managers

Here we see models of Enzo Ferrari (Scudero Ferrari), Alfred Neubauer (Mercedes-Benz), John Wyer (Porsche) Norbert Singer
(Porsche).

1:32 scale Gendarme

Here we have a model to the larger 1:32 scale which represents a patrolman on traffic duties in the uniform which was used between 1947 and 1965.

True Scale Models 1:64 scale 2019

By Maz Woolley

TSM (True Scale Models) are already well known in the UK and Europe for their 1:18 scale models, many made for manufacturers like JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) as dealer editions. But UK wholesalers are now distributing a 1:64 scale Mini GT TSM line which looks to be of high quality, and reasonably priced in the UK too, at a recommended retail price similar to the newly announced Hornby 1:76 models (made by Oxford in Hornby specific colours/liveries and boxed as Hornby).

Although here in the UK 1:64 scale has generally been left to Hot Wheels and Matchbox collectors it is a big seller in the US from Greenlight, M2, and Auto World, and in Japan and the far east there are 1:64 ranges like Tomy Vintage and Kyosho Minicar. In the last few years collectors of Oxford 1:76 scale models have grown greatly in number and I am informed that 1:76 outsells 1:43 scale models by a considerable factor. Maybe new collectors will take to 1:64 here in the UK if more high quality models arrive here at a reasonable price.

Looking at the models in the manufacturers images they appear to be very similar to Kyosho 1:64 models which are beautifully made and printed . Only three basic vehicles are currently available: Honda Civic, McLaren and Nissan GT-R. All these are made in various sporting versions with different liveries and in both RHD and LHD. So let’s look at the announced models which all seem to have excellent painting and printing along with very nice wheels.

New models – 2018 Jaguar I Pace and E Pace

By John F. Quilter

All text and photographs by, and copyright of, the Author unless otherwise stated.

Jaguar is finally following the lead of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and others in Europe of making available a range of their cars, both past and very current, in my favourite international collecting scale of 1:43. These are, at least in the UK, available from the official Jaguar UK website, https://shop.jaguar.com/uk/model-cars. The US Jaguar website does not have as large a range and it seems to lag what is offered on the UK site. I’ve been told by at least one dealer parts manager, and have prior experience, that scale models are a popular item in dealership lifestyle accessory boutiques. Unfortunately, US models collectors cannot order from the UK site but enterprising 1:1 car retailers have made some of these models available on eBay. So for die-hard collectors there is a way to obtain them which is what I did buying from Guy Salmon Jaguar in Bristol.

The two newest Jaguar products, the cutting edge all-electric I Pace, and the compact crossover vehicle, the E Pace are now available in multiple colours in 1:43 scale. The I Pace is in Photon Red or Corris Grey and the E Pace in Yulong White or Caldera Red, all official Jaguar colours. These items come on a black plinth covered by the usual clear Perspex box and the black card stock sleeve is surrounded in a clear plastic outer covering. This elegant packaging is marked “Jaguar” making these official promotional items. In the USA promotional models of cars dates back to the early 1950s when AMT and Johan produced a continuous series of 1:24 scale plastic models of each US automaker’s latest car. They were accurately done in proper colours with glazing and interiors, but unfortunately they were made of a type of plastic that tended to warp severely with age greatly disappointing avid long term collectors. By the early 60s this issue had been dealt with and later items are more durable.

The Europeans tended to be inclined to do promotional items in the more compact 1:43 scale though larger scale items are available on the Jaguar and Land Rover websites. These two items are made by TSM Model in China and judging by their heft are diecast, not resin. TSM, also known as True Scale Models, is a maker of many 1:43 scale models and have apparently landed the contract with Jaguar for these items and perhaps others going forward. TSM’s range of 1:43 items includes Honda, Toyota, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche and others. https://www.tsm-models.com/product.php

The I Pace I received from Guy Salmon Jaguar is in Corris Grey, one of 12 colours the prototype car can be ordered in and is left hand drive. Its interior is a single colour light Oyster one of five interior colours Jaguar offers on the 1:1 version according to my US brochure.

This model comes with one of the nine wheel styles offered, the 22 inch Style 5069. The roof is a very large tinted glass panel. The 1:1 car comes in three specification packages, S, SE, and HSE with varying levels of equipment and features. The HSE includes a Driver Assist Package that incorporates Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, High Speed Emergency Braking, 360 Degree Surround Camera with Blind Spot Assist. Exterior colours on the prototype vehicle include two different whites, two different silvers, two different greys, three different blacks, two reds and a dark blue.

Wheels are the 21 inch split spoke type, one of no less than 10 Jaguar offers for this vehicle which vary from 18 inch to 22 inch. Overall length of the full size I Pace is 184 inches making it a bit bigger than the 173 inch E Pace. The model measures 4.27 inches making it within .05 of an inch of correct 1:43 scale.

Jaguar’s E Pace is the next size down from their first crossover vehicle, the F Pace which is based on the XF saloon (length 195 inches) platform launched in 2007. The E Pace, based on the XE saloon (length 184 inches) is a size smaller and expands the range of crossover vehicles. E Pace, at 173 inches is a relatively compact vehicle.

The E Pace model by TSM is in Yulong white which is one of 10 colours offered on the real Jaguar. Interestingly they are heavy on whites, there are two shades, blacks, two shades, and greys or silvers, three shades. Surprisingly there are no greens in the selections but I am told by a US Jaguar salesman that white, black, and silver are currently the most popular colours. The model is also left hand drive and with an all Ebony interior. The E Pace model measures 4.02 inches making it exactly correct 1:43 scale. It should be noted that TSM also produce a 1:43 scale replica of the F Pace.

On both of these models there is some chassis detail including a chrome exhaust system on the plastic base plate on the E Pace. Obviously no exhaust system on the I Pace. There is a lot of commonality in the styling of these two cars with such things as a glass roof, a uniform Jaguar trapezoidal grill in black, and the visor over the rear window. The I Pace has a “reverse” scoop in the middle of the bonnet which is, according to the brochure, an exit for air entering the grill adding to aerodynamics.

So for those who follow the Jaguar developments and products, these are great models of the vehicles to add to one’s collection and in my case will bring my display of Jaguars from 1932 on up to current. I look forward to others as Jaguar’s range of products continues to expand and develop.
