Hornby News

By Maz Woolley

Hornby Hobbies owners of many famous brands including Corgi, Airfix, Scalextric and Hornby trains has announced an annual loss of 13.5 million pounds in the last year on a revenue of around 55 million pounds. Not surprisingly the share price has fallen by around 60% over the last year.  The only strategy the Board has is to shrink the business and reduce costs to try to earn a profit on a lower turnover and to go cap in hand to the market for 8 million pounds more capital.

Why is this important to collectors? Well it looks like the end of the Modelzone areas in W H Smith stores making it even more difficult to see models before you buy them and giving Hornby even less visibility to the general public. With no money and an ambition to shrink the ranges by 40%  a further cutback in investment in new castings and mouldings across the ranges seems inevitable and  initiatives like KitStarter will presumably be stopped. Since investment in new models in some ranges like Vanguards has been non-existent for some time does that mean that they will actually cease to be produced, after all the re-colours are struggling to sell in the current market place?

It seems sad to me that Corgi’s 60th year is being celebrated by a series of lacklustre repaints which say little about its history or contribution to the hobby over the years. Indeed I think that this year may see the Corgi brand decline into insignificance  for model car collectors which is a real shame.

Resin Roundup – Matrix

By Maz Woolley with contributions from Hans-Georg Schmitt

The marketplace for 1:43 scale resin models seems to be growing all the time. Once the preserve of small specialists making small batches of highly detailed models it now dominates the middle grounds of the collectors market and white metal models are much less common in this scale than they were. This article takes a look at some of the latest resin releases in this scale, and future releases, using pictures supplied by Matrix.

As ever Matrix mix a few standard vehicles like the Riley RM with a selection of other vehicles with rare or in some cases unique bodies. The models also cover a wide period from the 1930s through to the 1980s. The models are made in resin to 1:43 scale in China for Matrix.

Atlas Vehicles of the Nationale Volksarmee

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

This subscription series is sold by Atlas in Germany. It covers vehicles used by, and in the livery of, the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) which was founded in 1956 and disbanded in 1990 after the re-unification of Germany.

18543-05-2016Trabant P 601A Field Car  7 550 001

The first small field cars were built by VEB Sachsenring and were classified as the type P 601A. Supply began in 1966. Although intended to be used “off road” it only had two wheel drive. With a weight of only 645 kg, a few soldiers could lift it up or push it if help was necessary. The vehicle is based upon the Trabant car and is fitted with a two cylinder two stroke engine, which was rated at 26 hp at 4200 rpm.

18546-05-2016

The body was painted in same matt olive green as all NVA vehicles and equipment. It had no doors, only two chains prevented passengers from falling out. From the unique front lights to the spare wheel at the back this is very accurate model.  The military  emblems are well printed.  As is the case with all NVA-vehicles, the Trabi carries a registration plate only at the rear side. A realistic Spartan interior with steering wheel and column gear lever is fitted and an accurate number plate.

18547-05-2016IFA Horch P3 Medium bucket car  7 550 007
The IFA P3 was used as medium weight field car by the NVA. It was made in the VEB Horch Plant in Zwickau based on pre-war designs. Its six cylinder 2,4 litre four stroke engine supplied 75 hp at 3750 rpm. With permanent four-wheel drive, it was capable of a top speed of 95 kph on normal roads. The three-door body was covered by a folding hood. Because third door was placed in the rear panel the  spare wheel was placed above the left rear wheel. The model is well detailed with many small added parts. A reasonably well detailed interior and a fairly detailed baseplate make this a well executed model. As on all real NVA-vehicles the IFA P3 carries a registration plate only at the rear and the GDR emblems are not forgotten.

Eaglemoss Opel Designer Collection

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Here are details of four new items from the designer series of diecast models to 1:43 scale made by IXO. The models come with a booklet with the story of the designer and the original car. The booklets also provide a lot of background information on automobile manufacturing.

18358-05-2016133 Gordon Brown and Opel Kadett E

This generation of the Kadett was developed in the Opel Design Center under the leadership of the American Gordon Brown, who took over the baton from his predecessor Henry G. Haga, also an American. The appearance was more rounded, the “edge” was replaced by the “radius”. Gordon Brown’s life ended tragically. His hobby was landscape photography and on Pentecost Saturday 1983, he went to Rhine valley and on the top of the Lorelei rock he ignored the crowd barriers, slipped off and fell approximately 100 metres. Another American Wayne Cherry was his successor and he got the production release for the E-Cadet from GM headquarters.

The Kadett E was a three door estate. The model replicates the original well and is finished in the standard metallic silver finish used for this designer series. The black mouldings are well modelled.

18363-05-2016134 Chuck Jordan and Opel Kapitan 1952

In December 1938 Opel presented a new big car with an integral body and a six cylinder engine. The new car, named the Kapitan, was available as two or four door saloon and as a cabriolet. The modern design attracted many orders from abroad which brought much needed foreign currency. The outbreak of war ended production suddenly. In October 1948 Kapitan production was started again with a slightly modified car albeit heavily based upon the pre-war design.

The successor was developed by a young Chuck Jordan at the GM design centre in Detroit, a successor was developed. Jordan later had an impressive career within  GM. The newly designed Kapitan was launched in March 1951 and was the leasing seller in the 6 cylinder class in Germany for several years.

The 1952 Kapitan appears with a photo of Chuck Jordan in the background. As usual in this series, body is painted in silver metallic paint and fitted with black interior.

18364-05-2016135 Hans Mersheimer and Opel Cadet A
The success of the Volkswagen Beetle did not go unnoticed at Opel headquarters. Until then GM was not really interested in building small cars. So it needed much persuasion by Opel to get approval fro the creation of a small car to compete with the Volkswagen Beetle. The Kadett  A was the first Opel car since the company was bought by GM, which was developed entirely at Rüsselsheim. Under the supervision of chief engineer Hans Mersheimer a modern small car was developed. Its design was heavily influenced by the contemporary Kapitan.

The model is based upon the coupe version and is again painted in silver metallic with an interior was moulded in black. The radiator grille, bumpers, wheel rims and other small parts are chrome-plated.

18368-05-2016

136 Erhard Schnell and Opel Calibra
At the end of the 1980s more and more Japanese coupes were launched in the European Market. Opel decided that they need one of their own to compete with the Japanese head on. The “Advanced Design Studio” under leader Erhard Schnell got the order to develop an effective competitor. Modern mechanicals were placed in an exciting body. The Calibra was the car from Erhard Schnell before he went into retirement. Even today at the age of 89, he still visits motor shows and classic car events.
The Calibra appears in the box with a photo of Erhard Schnell. The body is again in silver metallic and fitted with a well detailed black interior.

Atlas Jaguar Collection – Jaguar F Type R

By Maz Woolley

Atlas Jaguar F Type R

The latest model shipped as part of the Jaguar collection brings up bang up to date. The F Type model in metallic grey with the panoramic dark glass roof is an impressive beast. Modelled in right hand drive with lots of interior detail though sadly the multifunction media panel has not been printed on which would have been nice.  A similar model has already been sold by IXO in their Premium X range.

The model represents a 2014 car in V8 R trim which is a top of the range car capable of over 160 mph and 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

Atlas Jaguar F Type R

One very nice touch is the fact that the brake calipers and disks can be clearly seen behind the wheels with the disk rotating with the wheel whilst the caliper stays static which is a lovely detail.

Atlas Jaguar F Type R

All in all an excellent model. This collection from Atlas continues to impress. Whilst most castings have already been seen in Ixo ranges the Atlas versions seem to be well made and usually cost considerably less.

Atlas Dinky Trucks – 435 Bedford TK Tipper

By Maz Woolley

Atlas Dinky Trucks 435 Bedford TK Tipper

Atlas Dinky Trucks 435 Bedford TK Tipper

The Bedford TK is the third model in this series. And is a nicely made replica of the original model. The box image is perhaps not as crisp as one would hope but a good model for those of us who cannot afford to collect the originals. This model was launched in 1964 and withdrawn in 1971. The Cab was used on another two models: a Bedford tow truck and a Coal truck.  I would not be surprised if one, or both of these, appears in this collection at a later date.

Atlas Dinky Trucks 435 Bedford TK Tipper

The model is presented in the colours used when the model was first launched and all the features operate as expected.

Atlas Dinky Trucks 435 Bedford TK Tipper Atlas Dinky Trucks 435 Bedford TK Tipper

All in all rather good value for money as it is little dearer than the small Citroen 2CV from Atlas.

A Car Collector ‘Widow’

To the Editor:

Today was a scorching hot Sunday best spend on the couch lazily watching old black and white movies. To my delight Sabrina was on. Not the 1995 version with Harrison Ford and Julia Roberts but the 1954 version with Audrey Hepburn and  Humphrey Bogart.  Sigh… great actors, beautiful sets and witty dialogue.

I even managed to coax my CC (car collecting) husband away from his online editing of this magazine to watch it half way through.   And then it happened,   IT always happens at some point when we are watching an old movie.  Audrey and Humphrey are coming up the sweeping drive after a night on the town only to be confronted by William Powell.  Karl sits up and stares intently at the pivotal scene.  And then it happens “I don’t recognize that car” and he is gone. Off to his office to log onto THE WEBSITE.   www.imcdb.org, The Internet Movie Car Database. I’ve lost him for the duration.  So I smile and call my dog Elijah Doolittle (yes I am a big Audrey Hepburn fan) on to the sofa with me and together we finish watching Bogart get the girl.  The car??  It was a …
